How to add and edit subtitles

Add timed subtitles to a Screenfly demo so viewers can follow the product flow with or without audio.

Why add subtitles

Subtitles make product demos easier to follow. They help viewers who watch without sound, skim a help article, or need the key steps reinforced in text.

In Screenfly, subtitles are shown at the bottom of the video and are included when you bake.

Open the subtitle editor

In Studio, open the Subtitles assistant rail. The rail is the main editing surface for subtitle text and timing.

You can add a subtitle at the current playhead time, type the instruction, and continue adding rows as the demo progresses.

Edit timing

Each subtitle has a start time. It displays until the next subtitle begins. If there is no next subtitle, Screenfly uses a sensible default duration near the end of the video.

Clicking a subtitle row seeks the preview to that subtitle's start time.

Write useful subtitle text

Good subtitles are short and action-oriented:

  • "Create a new project"
  • "Choose the dashboard template"
  • "Invite your teammate"
  • "Bake the finished walkthrough"

Avoid long sentences that cover too many actions at once.
